Oliver McGowan Training
The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism is the government’s preferred and recommended training for health and social care staff.
About the training
Named in memory of Oliver McGowan, this training is designed to help health and social care staff provide safe, compassionate and person-centred support. The course explores communication, reasonable adjustments, common barriers to care and the importance of listening to individuals, families and carers.
Co-produced and delivered with the involvement of people with lived experience, the training equips participants with practical knowledge they can apply in their everyday roles.
By completing the course, participants will be better prepared to:
- Understand learning disability and autism
- Recognise and challenge common misconceptions
- Communicate in an accessible and respectful way
- Make appropriate reasonable adjustments
- Reduce inequalities and improve people’s experiences of care
- Put each person’s needs, preferences and rights at the centre of support
This course is suitable for people working across health and social care who want to build their confidence and deliver more inclusive, informed and respectful services.
Tier 1
Tier 1 training includes two parts:
- Complete the free eLearning for Part 1 of Tier 1.
- Complete a one-hour online interactive session, co-delivered by experts.
Tier 1 is a one-hour online interactive session, co-delivered by a person with a learning disability and an autistic person, alongside a facilitator.

Tier 2
Tier 2 training includes two parts:
- Complete the free eLearning for Part 1 of Tier 2.
- Complete the one-day, face-to-face training, co-delivered by experts by experience, if you need Tier 2 training.
Tier 2 is a one-day, face-to-face training session, co-delivered by a person with a learning disability, an autistic person, and a qualified trainer.
Staff who require Tier 2 training do not need to complete Tier 1 first—just the eLearning. Tier 2 includes all the Tier 1 material.
